One of the most common questions I get from engaged couples is: “Do we need a second photographer?” The answer depends on a few key factors! Here are some things to consider when deciding if having two photographers on your wedding day is the right choice for you.
1. Logistics & Locations
Where will your wedding day events take place?
• Are you getting ready, having your ceremony, and hosting your reception all in one location?
• Will you and your partner be getting ready separately at different locations?
• Is your ceremony in one place and your reception in another?
If everything is happening in one spot, a single photographer can typically cover it all. But if multiple locations are involved, a second photographer ensures no moments are missed. Having two photographers allows coverage in two places at once—whether it’s capturing both partners getting ready or different angles during key moments.
2. Guest Count & Venue Size
How many guests are you expecting?
• Small & Intimate (Under 100 guests): A single photographer can typically cover all the big moments.
• Medium to Large (100+ guests): With a bigger guest list, there’s often more happening at once—larger families, more mingling, and bigger spaces to cover. A second photographer helps capture additional moments, such as guest reactions, cocktail hour candids, and different perspectives during the ceremony and reception.
If documenting more of the in-between moments and guest interactions is important to you, a second photographer can make a big difference!
3. Is Extra Coverage Important to You?
A second photographer isn’t just about logistics—it’s about capturing more angles, reactions, and moments that might otherwise go unseen. While I feel confident in capturing everything with a full day of coverage (8-10 hours), I can only be in one place at a time. A second photographer provides:
✔ Different perspectives during key moments like the first look, ceremony, and first dance.
✔ More guest interactions and candid moments while I focus on the couple.
✔ Backup coverage, ensuring that no special moment is missed.
So, Do You Need a Second Photographer?
There’s no right or wrong answer—it ultimately depends on your wedding logistics and how much coverage you’d like. If you’re unsure, chat with your photographer (hey, that’s me!) to help you decide what’s best for your day.
